KKS Fantasy: Creating SMART Gilas 2, Chot-style

Can't have Gilas without these two
Run and gun, attack relentlessly, hustle, bump and tumble. Smash mouth basketball that puts a premium on outscoring the opponent at every turn, and when possible, to run them right out of the gym.

From his title run earlier in 2000 with Coca Cola to his current CV-filler with Talk 'n' Text, Coach Chot's style is his and his alone in the local basketball scene. Robert Jaworski preached rugged defense, Tim Cone wanted fluidity through set plays, Jong Uichico tinkered with his line-up to play textbook basketball, Rajko Toroman called for hundreds of double picks for his point guard and Yeng Guiao pretty much let his players do whatever the hell they wanted on the floor.

Reyes has a little bit of everything mentioned above in his sleeve.

He learned the trade from guys like Cone, worked under the San Miguel franchise and picked up some trade secrets from Ron Jacobs' boys and has the luxury of having basketball  visionaries such as Norman Black, Nash Racela and Ryan Gregorio as his Team MVP peers.

That being said, you can count on the next SMART Gilas team to run and share the basketball while still playing solid defense. It's a dream at this point and everything's still up in the air, but given the Coca Cola/ Talk 'n' Text history, here's a possible line-up for the future.

PG Jayson Castro
SG Ryan Reyes
SF Arwind Santos
PF Ranidel de Ocampo
C Marcus Douthit

PG Alex Cabagnot
SG Chris Lutz
SF Marcio Lassiter
PF Kelly Williams
C Sonny Thoss

PG JVee Casio
SG Gary David
SF James Yap
PF Joe DeVance
C Greg Slaughter

PG Keifer Ravena
SG Ray Ray Parks
PF Dave Marcelo
C Junemar Fajardo

On paper, this team looks downright scary and good enough to make the Chinese and Koreans think twice about over-passing. Don't look or expect much from the bigs with this one, this KKS fantasy SMART Gilas 2 team is built for one thing only: run.

Who do you think should be included/ excluded from our fantasy SG2?

  2. I'd say 1st five should be:

PG: Jayson Castro/Alex Cabagnot (I'd love to have both PG's on the team. Doesnt matter who starts.)

SG: Chris Lutz (Lutz is used to the international style unlike Reyes who's sometimes over aggressive defense and tendency "not to listen" might cost us a few games.)

SF: Marcio Lassiter (Arwind Santos is best at the 4. Because of his inconsistent shooting ability he will be a liabilty at the 3 spot for us.)

PF: Sonny Thoss (He's playing some PF at Alaska and played some PF under Yeng Guiao's Powerade PHL Team. He has that 15 foot jumper and skills to be a perfect compliment to Douthit)

    C: Marcus Douthit
