Running on primal instincts |
There is a universal truth when it comes to the beings that roam this very world that we find ourselves fortunate enough to be part of. That no matter the education, the training or coaching, when things become increasingly challenging, nay, competitive, that every one, be it man, woman or beast, reverts to doing what they know instinctively. They no longer think, they just act in the manner that comes natural to them.
And for the Alaska Aces' 6"1 1/2 rookie Calvin Abueva, that means playing with fire, getting into the head of his opponents and occasionally, flopping to sell the contact and get the calls from the referees. There are no Xs and Os at times, Abueva leaves that up to his teammates. He runs the floor, goes hard and does whatever he pleases when he is given the basketball. It's the primal instinct to compete, to win.
Come Game 3, pay attention to Abueva and how he works the mind-boggling low post screen play. He's the only one who does it as far as we can remember. Guards are given screens and picks, centres as big as 6"7 Sonny Thoss or near 7 foot import Rob Dozier? Not so much. But look at Abueva, and how he "clogs" his own big man's space by setting a screen down low. It puts four guys into a small space down low. But at the same time, in a congested area such as the one made by Abueva, the biggest and strongest guy will almost, always be able to muscle his way through or around (which is often the case when they run that brilliant play).
Offensively, Abueva has learned the "art of shooting." He jumps straight up, he doesn't lean to either side or even tries fadeaways. His form is near Tony de la Cruz-esque. That's education. That's practice. Does he make the shot? No. He's not a natural shooter like teammate JVee Casio.
Do the missed attempts, ugly as they are, get to him?
No.
Because when the ball isn't falling for him from outside, he goes back to what he instinctively knows: attack the rim. Run right through mofos and get the ball closer to the iron. Swing the elbows, protect the basket, worry about looking good later, just make the play. Or in Abueva's case: ANY play.
Do you hate on Abueva because he is brash, cocky and borderline arrogant?
Have you ever spoken to him or been around the guy to conclude such?
As a player, Abueva does all the intangibles for his team to win. He hustles on the floor. He is fearless. Lost in the near-altercations, fighting and battling down low for rebounding position and the normal hand-to-hand/forearm-to-forearm combat against guys 6"5 and above is the fact that Abueva stands smaller than everyday good guy and crowd favourite 6"3 James Yap.
But Abueva is the league's top rebounder. And he doesn't even play more than 35 minutes a game.
So if he gives you the "nonchalant look," or if he sticks his tongue out to celebrate to himself, then let him be. He just took an elbow to the face from a guy whose biceps is as big as his thigh. We doubt that you'd be willing to do that.
Do you hate on Abueva because he flops?
For those who saw Abueva during his college days, "flopping" would be the last thing you'd ever expect from the man touted as "The Beast." Why would he resort to such when he plays bigger than everyone else?
But the PBA is a different "beast" altogether. Here, guys are bigger. And scrappy workhorses don't get calls. Rookies don't get calls. 6"1 1/2 guys who stick their noses into the big boys' business don't get calls, they get hit.
So Abueva had to adjust. He had to sell calls. Over-sell them to the point that he pretty much stole a whole chapter from the Book of Tubid.
We're split on Abueva flops. The PBA referees have done a great job in sorting out which ones are flops and those caused by actual hits. They don't get it right 90% of the time, but they're trying.
Do you hate on Abueva because he is a dirty player?
Has he stuck two fingers up someone's ass yet? He gave schoolmate Leo Najorda a subtle kick to the groin in a rebound scuffle in Game 2. But other than that, we haven't seen anything borderline dirty by way of Abueva. The elbows are part of the game. He hasn't pulled a Rudy Distrito on anyone. Not even a Beau Belga clothesline from hell (wait, we think we just hinted on our homeboy Belga being dirty lol).
James Yap whining about how Abueva was going for his injured back-- that was stupid. Yap was posting up Abueva, you guard those with a hand out to the back (or if the refs allow, a stiff forearm). You check into a game, you expect to get contact. If you're injured and not mentally prepared, then sit. Easy as that.
Abueva is Terry Saldana, Marc Pingris and Ronald Tubid all rolled into one. He is at his best when he doesn't have to think about the game and just plays it. The Xs and Os he leaves to Casio and Cyrus Baguio. The way he plays, with all heart and hustle, is magnetic and just a joy to watch.
Why do you hate Abueva?
Aun oh hahaha! Kilikilishot strikes again! Abueva fanmode #clearly
ReplyDeleteAno pa nga ba aasahan mo pag SMC hater db? C'mon admit it, Bro =) It won't hurt you anyway.
tagos ba brad? admit it... hahahaha
DeleteHaha ako itataas ko n kamay ko na hater ako ni Abueva :) I hope kilikilishot say present as well na hater xia ng SMC hehe c'mon man!
DeleteNope, not an SMC hater. Never hated on any specific team (Petron siguro malapit na), only players, some coaches and of course- PBA Vince McMahon.
#abueva #alaska #fanmode
ReplyDeleteWe're all fans of a certain team/player and it's normal to hate. The difference is some admit it others don't! #shotsfired
ReplyDeletegreat article!
ReplyDeletenice article the beast you're one of a kind...aces was so lucky to have a player like you....keep it up....
ReplyDeleteALL AROUND PLAYER... THE BEAST!! ingit lng mga haters nyan.. kc nga NGANGA sila.. kahit anung paninira LOSERS pa rin!!
ReplyDeleteIve been a long time PBA fan and I've never seen a rookie have this much impact and influence on his team since Benjie Paras' rookie year. #gamechanger
ReplyDeleteNice article bro!why do u hate abueva?tama cya naka usap o naklala m nada cya sa personal?he doing hes job n the court!kng anu sabhn n coach gnagawa nya lamang!! Kng napunta cya sa team nyo do u stil hate him?
ReplyDeleteuntamed.
ReplyDeleteBenjie Paras is way different from Calvin Abueva. Paras impact is full and pure positive. Unlike Abueva, he made his name loud in PBA basketball way beyond the way that PARAS made his name when he was a ROOKIE. Good attitude towards basketball but bad manner in treating opponents. Lebron James said "I don't want to hurt others who is already hurt.. I just want to play basketball without hurting. I hate injury, i don't want my opponent to get injure.. that is not competitive basketball anymore.."
ReplyDeleteClearly, this blog is just to clean his ROOKIE's name. Enough for this man, he already made his name. No need for you to back him up most specially when it comes to your bias opinion. You know why there is not Pilipino basketball player in the NBA? Simply because we don't have the right attitude in the floor, yes we have the good attitude in terms in basketball but we don't have the right attitude to bring out.
YES, if it's not PHYSICAL that is not PINOY basketball. But being PHYSICAL is way different from INTENTIONALLY HURTING someone. We are sometimes over use the word PHYSICALITY. We forget that basketball is not just about being PHYSICAL its about bringing up your pure talent. If acting is your talent, then you have to pick a new career path. :)
JUST SAYING Basketball is a physical game but it doesn't mean you have to hurt others. Kaya nga may tinatawag na playoff FOUL it is because he that is your last option it is not a choice. JUST PLAY BALL not the BALLS.
Peace Out.
I totally agree! Calvin is a good player (talent wise) but with his ATTITUDE yan ikbabagsak ng career nia few years from now. A good basketball player comes with good attitude. #masterflopper
DeleteHaters Gonna Hate.. :)
DeletePeace Out. O_O\m/
DeleteLOSERS? 9-1 losers?
Deleteisip isip ka nga inutil
laro ka muna basketball brod....di mo ata alam sinabi mo....MOVE ON TANGA....
DeleteHaters make Abueva more famous, but in a quite negative way! Beast, can you please tone-down your attitude even a bit? You're not being a good example to young PBA aspirants.
DeleteHe just played with heart and gives his best. lagi nya yang sinabi..he dont give impressi0n for evryone to love him, and so you will just hate him.
ReplyDeleteVery good article... Ung iba nanuntok at naninipa pa. Sabi flopper.
the 'intentionally-hurting-me' band wagon. Libre sakay guys.
ReplyDeleteFlopping Machine!
Stupid SMC fans. Tama na ang reklamo. For sure Tim Cone will make the proper adjustments. Pero Abueva is Abueva.
ReplyDeleteThe way he plays, with all heart and hustle, is magnetic and just a joy to watch....VERY TRUE....
ReplyDeleteAs a MC47 fan, I'm not the biggest James Yap fan. In fact, I kinda-sorta hate him, what with his undeserved 1st (even his 2nd was "iffy" for me) MVP award (Kerby should've won), and his love-hate relationship with TV's (inarguably) most annoying celebrity.
ReplyDeleteAbueva, on the other hand, is a Ronal Tubid incarnate. Love him! He's a perfect Ginebra player. Mayabang pero magaling.
With those said, and after watching the Yap vs Abueva video by AKTV. That guy Abueva? Man, what a flopper. I can totally understand why James was frustrated all game. Nakakapikon talaga yung flops ni Abueva.
But at the same time, if you're an Alaska fan, how can you hate on Abueva? Or better yet, how can you NOT love him??
Many hate Abueva. But many loves Jaworski. Who is worse? Who is better? Tell me.
ReplyDeleteAgain, I would say this - If he is on your team, I am sure you wouldn't throw hate comments against him.
It's evident that you want to clean-up his name. Well, some people are not that vulnerable. Yeah, he's great, but if I'll rate his attitude, it's quite terrible. He's so full of himself! I know I'm not the only one seeing it. On the other hand, I still respect those who idolize him. But guys, have you ever thought about it's probable effect on the younger players who aspire to be in the league? He's definitely an eyesore.
ReplyDeleteP.S. "Hater gonna hate..." Enough with this phrase, oh please. Open your eyes. He's way problematic as a PBA player. He's exceptional, in both positive and negative ways. No question why he acquire many idols and haters as well.
alaska fan ako, so obvusly i like calvin n our team. jst lke 2 share my opinion about calvins issues ngyn. 1. ano ginawa nya 2 deserv masabihan na may maging bad efect/nflunces sa younger plyrs & prblmtc as a PBA plyr? yan bng nag flo-flop? yan bng ilabas lng nya Emotions nya during sa laro? Yun bng ng laro lng nan tough defens? O ang bad nfluenc ba yng nanipat patalikod O nanuntok patalikod nan kalaban sa loob nan court (isa pa, ano yng ginawa mo kay caguiao d ba pananakit yun nan kapwa player) O yng bang personal issues mo sa loob nan court dalHN mo sa media @ sabihin mo na ngpakilala lng msydo(kilala na yan pg apak sa PBA) o ginawa mo lng yan dahil sanay kana mag lad-lad nan baho mo sa media???(kaya may gag order ka loko. Let ur coach do d tlkng).
Big J gives cheap shots and gets way too physical in D for the poster boys.
'Kung ayaw nyo masaktan, mag chess na lang kayo.' - Jawo.
-----
eto lang yan mga brad, kung nanalo ang SMC nung game 2, sa tingin nyo magsasalita yang si James Yap?? i don't think so. admit it SMC fans, d lang si Calvin ang may magandang depensa last game, the whole team itself. they successfully contain Bowles and Ping. naghahanap lang ng masisisi tong si James kaya sya nagsasalita nang kung anu-ano na kesyo siniko sya. ganyan ang laro eh, di nman maiiwasan yan. mas masahol pa nga ang ginagawa nina jawo, rellosa and distrito jan eh. yeah given that he's flopper, pero as long as his team is winning, there's no reason for him to stop his flopping.
ReplyDeletewalang hiya talaga si abueva! Pati si steph curry tinitira ung injured ankle nya! Napakawalang hiya, napaka pangit, walang modo, walang respeto.
Nag-go-go hard agad! All out agad?! So what kung mali ung tawag sayo!
ReplyDeletespeaking like n0nesense? Idi wag kang man0od. Simple as that. Hintay kalang dahil magchachampion ang Alaska.
Deletesusmaryosep. We cool brah.
DeleteMas bad influence yung nanchichicks nung may asawa pa.
You said it! Mas bad influence yung nangangaliwa sa asawa. #FaceofthePBAmyass
ReplyDeleteangas ba kamo?-tubid, cardona
dirty ba kamo?-mark yee, ogie menor, penisi
pikon ba kamo?-ildefonso, yap, arboleda
"Come Game 3, pay attention to Abueva and how he works the mind-boggling low post screen play."- I saw this a lot since i read your blog, I particulary was left in awe during thei game against GInebra, he set a screen for Dozier right below the rim, and it is against Macklin who is taller and stronger, so it left Chris Ellis challenging the shot w/c resulted to an And 1.
