Gilas Pilipinas: A matter of self-confidence

Which Gabe Norwood will show up at the FIBA Asia tournament this August?

The one who constantly second guesses and or over analyzes every move on the hardcourt to the point of self-destruction, or the skinny St Vincent St Mary LeBron James clone we saw but glimpses of in last year's Jones Cup title run?

It's time to man up, Norwood is a skilled ball handler with an iffy jumpshot but arms the length of a pteredactyl. There are a lot of flaws in his game, but when he doesn't over think it, he is arguably just as effective as say, Calvin Abueva in Alaska's title run last Commissioner's Cup- minus the theatricality of course.
He can rebound, cut from both sides of the floor and is arguably one of the better and more athletic leapers in all of Asia. What he can't do is complement his God given natural ability to just get to wherever he wants on the floor with shooting with accuracy.

So which Gabe Norwood will show up this time around?

Our friendly advise to the admirable and always open to criticism Norwood (it is definitely a wonder that he hasn't blocked us on Twitter yet) is to just play free. Don't think about trying to make the correct play or looking for the open man first. If you are open, then take the shot. If you can get closer to the rim, then take that extra hop step you love so much. If you are eye level at the rim, then give it an intense INAMOKA SLAM and show all your haters up.

Given the intense level of competition, Norwood is our best bet as a utility point guard and backcourt defender. If we can have him play alongside Fonacier/Chan, Pingris, De Ocampo and Douthit that would be surreal.

So... Which Gabe Norwood do you think will show up?

  1. My problem with Gabe is that he is redundant to the team. He is an over rated defender and might be a liability offensively. He is in the team because he we can make him bring the ball up or be the PG in a big line up. Problem is that we already have 3 PG's! He will be coming in off the bench as a three guy, problem is he doesn't bring a whole lot of energy. I would have rather taken a guy like Abueva or Arwind just for their tenacity and gulang. Too bad Ryan Reyes is unavailable as what we are lacking right now is an on ball defender who can defend the wing. If Norwood will have any success in the team, he has to be aggressive and he has to be consistent with his jumpers.
