Supernatural

Peerless.
We have simply run out of adjectives for TNT Katropa’s Jayson Castro at this point.

From averaging 32mpg, 19ppg 4rpg 4apg in the first two conferences of the PBA season, the FIBA Asia recognized “Best Point Guard in Asia” has gone absolutely berserk in the ongoing PBA Governor’s Cup with a 25mpg 23ppg 6rpg 8apg clip. Let those numbers sink in for a minute. Castro has been so good that he has helped his team go undefeated in four games despite the insipid play of import Mario Little.

Sure, we could show rookie Troy Rosario some love and give him some props for his impressive play, but Castro has been playing on an entirely different level. Has he taken notice of the individual playing field? Has someone whispered into his ear that hey, this is arguably his best chance to win a PBA MVP award since the defending back-to-back winner, San Miguel’s towering Junemar Fajardo, has been battling injuries and some malaise all throughout the season?

Honestly, when was the last time we saw a local averages those near triple-double like numbers? Fil-Sham Sonny Alvarado? 90s non-winner (sorry not sorry) Jun Limpot?

We hope that Castro’s run continues and that he is able to lead TNT to the PBA Finals (and win a championship). That would help his cause a lot, since even when Fajardo just goes through the motions of a game he is still able to finish with a double-double (not to mention that he already has 1 of this year’s available 3 titles in the bag). If Fajardo rebounds and gets SMB anywhere near the PBA Finals, then he’ll be a lock to win his 3rd straight MVP plum. If Castro can somehow blitz and blur his way to a title, the PBA would be hard-pressed not to recognize his efforts.

23-6-8.

Wow. Just wow.

The scoring will always be a given, since that has been Castro’s bread-and-butter, but the rebounding and assists? And he’s not simply getting his assists up by virtue of the dribble-drive/ drive-and-kick offense, he’s actually making heady plays and looking like a solid point guard on the floor. The rebounds? When you factor in teammates like Little, Rosario, Harvey Carey, Ranidel de Ocampo and Kelly Williams who are all looking to crash the boards?

Wow. Just wow.

So much like how we have christened de Ocampo as “Ang Dalubhasa,” we will go on and call Castro “The Supernatural” instead of “The Blur” from this day forward.

Because, really. He is THAT good.
