Bring FIBA back to Manila

The country’s hopes and dreams of enjoying (tremendous) homecourt advantage come the FIBA Asia Championships took a blow when the FIBA Executive Committee opted to hold the 2013 event in Lebanon.

And while most would sit and sulk with the loss (imagine our Team Pilipinas boys playing before adoring, smart Pinoy basketball fans who would surely treat each game—eliminations or knockout, like a game 7 PBA showdown between San Mig Coffee and Barangay Ginebra San Miguel) and even question the FIBA Asia Secretary General  Hagop Khajirian’s integrity (he is Lebanese after all), let’s all just move forward from this temporary setback.

Basketball is alive and kicking once again thanks to the concerted efforts of several people from Manny V. Pangilinan all the way down to whichever kind soul is in charge of picking up jockstraps and doing laundry for the players. Of course, it could all come crashing down in a blink of an eye (and history says it might, given all the politicking in Pinoy sports) but let’s refrain from being pessimists.

The 2013 FIBA Asia Championships that will see decide which team/s represent Asia in the World Tournament will be held at Lebanon and not our beloved Pilipinas.

Get over it.

They’re the defending FIBA Asia Cup champions. They deserve it, the Lebanese Basketball Federation is just as solid as our PBA so there.

On the flipside, coach Chot Reyes, Marcus Douthit and the rest of Team Pilipinas are still working on getting us back on the upper echelon of Asian basketball. Best case scenario? Is for Team Pilipinas to continuously provide strong international showings (medal finishes surely wouldn’t hurt) and in a way, “earn” the hosting via the basketball court.
