The Kraken Watch: June Mar Fajardo is growing

The Kraken: Evolving into something scarier
We've been reading live pre-season tweets about the Petron Blaze Boosters and their prized 2012 number one overall PBA Draft Pick June Mar Fajardo-- and it is scary. While the team has been struggling to find on-court chemistry and balance with their redundantly stacked roster, the one constant has been Fajardo's continued growth as a legit PBA big man.

He's been putting up double figure points, being an easy target for all of his teammates-- his hands are quite exceptional (a must for all bigs, something even Kobe Bryant would attest is the biggest difference between dumping the ball to a Kwame Brown and an Andrew Bynum) and he never strays away from the low post which is always a good thing (hi Japeth! Haaay Japeth).
Of course, we shouldn't expect Fajardo to dominate the league right away. He will undoubtedly put up solid numbers-- but it's hard to fathom him to instantly post 20-15 numbers this season en route to a Rookie of the Year award. His back to the basket game needs to improve, and just from all the wings that they have on that line-up alone, it's hard to really see Fajardo ever getting the basketball once the game is on other than on tip-ins, gimmes and putback dunks.

A few things that he can work in: footwork and footspeed (he has 2x PBA MVP Danny Ildefonso as a guru so that takes care of that), rebounding position (there's Dorian Pena), gulang (Arwind Santos and Denok Miranda) and shot block timing (Santos). So pretty much, Fajardo's covered with all the right teachers-- throw in a genius like "assistant" coach Rajko Toroman and the future looks very bright for the young Cebuano center.

Talented big men don't come often and it's nice to know that Fajardo is on the right track to greatness. Him opting to play in the ABL to sharpen his skills while playing behind and against big imports will only help him moving forward. The same cannot be said for Greg Slaughter who is having a hard time as it is being a legit seven footer battling 6"4 centers n the UAAP.

    1. Ok!
