Barangay Overkill. Much.

Dugong Pinoy...
...Lahing Ginebra?
What happens if Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, now blessed with 6"9 athlete Japeth Aguilar, is able to somehow pry veteran 6"9 Fil-Tonggan Asi Taulava from the hands of Team MVP?

Then it only solidifies our claim that this team has nowhere been near it's given "underdog" moniker not since reigning PBA Most Valuable Player Mark Caguioa's blonde-bombing rookie year (when they actually played guys named Ronald Magtulis and Banjo Calpito heavy minutes). Never say die? How can a team that is supposed to win big be "never say die?" The new battle cry should be "play to your standards" if anything.

Seriously, why Ginebra is still in hot pursuit of an aging role player is beyond us. Aside from Aguilar, they already have little (if not mis-)used players such as Rico Maierhofer, Billy Mamaril, Willy Wilson, Rudy Hatfield and not to mention the resurgent Kerby Raymundo.

Honestly, we have no real beef with Taulava signing with e country's favorite ballclub. Our problem lies in how the media is interpreting it.

That the long time national player only wants to play with his so called favorite team, that he wants to go out with a bang playing for the most popular ballclub and have that storybook ending he feels he rightfully deserves.

And that the people who have rights over him, Team MVP by way of the Meralco Bolts, should just hand him over to their rivals, Team SMC, with little or nothing in return.

Yes Taulava is old. But did you watch him play in the ABL wherein he won the MVP plum?

Also, Ginebra isn't only dreaming of acquiring Taulava the player, but you also have to look at this guy as Taulava, the brand. Or at the very least, one possible Team MVP pitchman who has great recall among locals- hoopheads or not.

So please, stop painting Team MVP as the bad guys. If anything, blame Ginebra. If they want Taulava so much, then is it really that hard to burn the lines and negotiate? Taulava isn't the bad guy here as well, we understand that he wishes to retire as a PBA player (as he should, and a Hall of Famer at that), but both sides of the table need a fair shake if this trade were to ever take place.

How strong would Ginebra be?

Monstrous. Tenorio, Caguioa, Baracael, Aguilar and Taulava to finish the game would almost be like sending a possible starting five for an All Star Team, even a national team.

And Alfrancis Chua is just the right amount of crazy to lead them to it.

  1. BGK still wont win the big one .... Caguioa will still shoot his ill-timed, low-percentaged shots regardless of who his teammates are .... Baracael's jumper is as consistent as the weather .... Aguilar will pile-up the stats for a few games, then disappear most of the conference .... Tenorio has been playing tired and inconsistent since his last few conferences with ALASKA.

  2. Marketing wise, getting Asi is a great move. Basketball wise, it will help them but not assure them of a championship. I kind of agree with coach RG that the ABL is a weaker league than the PBA. Any league that has leo Avenido winning MVP, Jai Reyes as an MVP contender and Froi Baguion as an impact player is definitely a lesser league than the PBA. In a league like the ABL, Asi SHOULD dominate.

Maybe in the first few games, Asi will get his double double but as the tournament goes, I think Asi will just be a solid starter and not the star that BGK fans hope to be. He will definitely help defensively and in rebounding but I think that is it. Offensively, I don't think he will be as effective as we think. He has never been a great pick and roll player and he will not be able to score at will on the post like he did in the ABL.

If he manages to stay healthy with the physicality in the PBA and get 12 pts, 8 rebounds and a whole lot of mentoring to Japeth, he would have already done his job.

  3. sources:
    i. Barako Bull to draft Ian Sanggalang.

ii. Ginebra will get Sanngalang + second round pick(future or now, depending on draft class) from Barako Bull in exchange for Willy Wilson + imaginary 1st round pick (yes, Ginebra has a 1st round picks since they went to the Finals and got Japeth) + a barako bull commercial where anne curtis & georgina wilson gettin......

iii. Ginebra will acquire Taulava via 3 team trade.

Ginebra sends 2nd round pick (NOT the future or now pick) to Meralco
Barako sends willy wilson + future second round pick to Meralco
    Meralco sends Asi to Barako
Ginebra takes Asi and all the remaining credibility of Barako in exchange for Bal David.
