KKS Scouting Report: 2013 PBA Draft Favorites (Part 2)

Continuing our Scouting Report on the 2013 PBA Draft “Favorites” with the exception of Carlo Lastimosa, SG, 5”10 and James Forrester, SG, 6”0 because, quite frankly, we didn’t know where Destiny Cable put AksyonTV not until maybe three weeks ago.

And that’s only because we reset our television and put it on auto programming.

In case this is your first time to drop by our page, please feel free to check out Part 1 of our Scouting Report. We're going with the 2013 PBA Draft Favorites-- their Strengths and Weaknesses plus the PBA player that they remind us of (Ceiling would be who or what they could become and Basement would be, well, the basement).

Ryan Roose Garcia 5”9.5

Strengths: gifted with range, made giant leap from shooting guard to point guard, able to play off the ball and defer to superstar teammate/s, solid ball handling skills, heady point guard, savvy, can create own shot

Weakness: man to man defense, late on switches, average frame might be a problem against stronger guards and fighting through screens, any questions pertaining to his relationship with a former teammate and a famous TV personality

Ceiling: More offensively potent Mark Barroca, minus the stingy defense

Basement: Shorter RJ Jazul

Ryan Buenafe 6”2

Strengths: court savvy/ cerebral, knows his spots on the floor, can finish at the rim left or right, face up scorer, ball handler, high IQ passer, can create his own shot

Weakness: college power forward body with a 10-year veteran shooting guard’s skill set and instinct, too heavy to run with the league’s SGs-- maybe three steps slower even, plays defense with hands- foul prone, if he is able to trim down to a “running” weight he’ll be effective coming off the bench in whatever role on offense

Ceiling: Baby-fat Assassin version of Baby Faced Assassin Larry Fonacier, or 6"2 Beau Belga

Basement: Shorter San Mig Coffee Ken Bono (skills are undeniable but, because of his body weight, is too much of a liability on defense to even get a look from his coach)

Justin Chua 6”4.5

Strengths: has shown a willingness to bang bodies in the paint, knows his role, can play stellar 7”0 stopping defense when motivated and given daylight, nice touch from the perimeter

Weakness: unfortunately, most of the guys in the PBA who are his height play small forward or are hybrids so defending them will be a concern, will give up inches to up and coming centers, needs to polish back-to-the-basket game, more face-up than post-up

Ceiling: Doug Kramer, if he puts his mind into rebounding he’ll get minutes for sure

Basement: baby Gian Chiu

Ricardo Cawaling 6’1.75

Strengths: is a prototypical wing who can shoot, slash, pass and make stops, range is spotty but can heat up if given enough touches

Weakness: lacks “fire” in the PJ Simon “I will score in bunches just get James out of the way” or Calvin Abueva “take no prisoners mafakas” kind of way, borderline service/ role player at best, can guard the Baguios, Fonaciers and Chans, can’t guard Caguioas, Castros, Lutz

Ceiling: “whatever you need” John Wilson (offense or defense) minus the low release and streaky three ball
Basement: Nino Gelig (yup, he’s still in the league with his Espana homeboy Cyrus Baguio) even a Rey Guevarra (we simply refuse to refer to him by his coach Ryan Gregorio’s playful moniker).

Jeric Fortuna 5’7.125”

Strengths: quick trigger (faster than RenRen Ritualo even-which is downright blasphemous in some circles), clutch point guard with low turnover rate, heady, makes correct passes

Weakness: looks every bit his size, not as quick as his peers, defense is passable but not great, not as strong as an Emman Monfort built-wise, limited in terms of creating offense (makes correct passes in sets a la Jvee Casio, but not a “pull a rabbit out of the hat”/ adjust on the fly passer like a Tenorio or Cabagnot)

Ceiling: JVee Casio

Basement: No muscle tone Rudy Lingganay

L.A. Revilla 5’7.125”

Strengths: slasher, mid range game, ball handler, speedster, can go either way, create and adjust on the fly, pick and roll/ pick and pop point guard, quick feet on defense, leader

Weakness: shaky three ball, injury prone, health issues, small in height, lean in built

Ceiling: L.A. Tenorio (his college ceiling pre injuries and diabetes)

Basement: T.Y. Tang (serviceable and solid but not starter material)
