KKS Trade Reaction: Monfort to NLEX

Where did this guy's game go?
Remember when we used to laud Marnel "Mac" Baracael as possibly the best two-way and PBA-ready player of the SMART Gilas I lot? A roster that boasts of Chris Tiu, JVee Casio, Mark Barroca and even the then unproven Fil-Am pair of Marcio Lassiter and Chris Lutz? We were that high on him, because he was that good a player.

Until he got drafted into the PBA.

For whatever reason, Baracael lost his way from being a legit "3 and D" guy who could cover spots 1 to 4 and somehow transformed into a mindless jackass, err, jacker. Defense? What defense?

This is why Emman Monfort's name is on this entry's title and not Baracael's. Because the 5"6 point guard who came out of the Ateneo basketball program has managed to make a name for himself in the pros, even when most had him pencilled as a future non-rotation player a.k.a. ABL/ D-League/ PCBL starter (this writer included).

On to the grades then.

On the wings of love

Trade looming?
With the recent acquisition of Barako Bull Energy Cola by newcomers Phoenix Petroleum, we cannot help but feel the budding romance in the air.

Romance, in the sense that the next two conferences (and or more) will probably be a Team San Miguel Corporation lovefest by way of most of the guys on the Phoenix roster being sent “back” to the one they truly love be it San Miguel, Ginebra or Star. This in turn will corroborate and confirm everyone’s hunch that yes, Barako served as a true farm team and that most of its players were simply out on loan (remember Joseph Yeo’s “Gentleman’s Agreement?”).  Bye-bye Barako farm team, the players get to be sent to winning franchises and we are finally (hopefully) rid of lopsided trades from here on out.

Unfortunately, not everyone will enjoy a happy-ending, or we don’t see ALL of the guys from Barako going back.

Thanks for the memories

As per numerous reports, the Philippine Basketball Association and its fans are finally saying goodbye to the Barako Bull Energy Cola franchise.

This, after about near a decade of lopsided, shady trades and serving as conduit for mostly San Miguel Corporation-backed teams (San Miguel, Ginebra and Star). To say that we will finally be rid of the shady transactions with Barako's exit might be a bit too optimistic though, since business is still business in a league that has seen star players shipped to another for cash and under-the-table/ off-court agreements.

But hey, at least we got rid of the biggest culprit out there.

When was it? When they traded so many star players for next to nothing? For when they were truly given a chance to rebuild through the PBA Draft, they chose to spit on all of our faces and trade their first rounders away? When this team returned with an even shadier product that we honestly have not seen on the market, that was the end of it all. It was a farm team that owed so much to so many, from the outside looking in.

Last season, they made quite the impression as a bear competitive squad. Only for key guys to be traded. Denok Miranda had a stellar Philippine Cup before the mess that somehow sent him to GlobalPort, Alex Cabagnot back to San Miguel and Sol Mercado to Barako Bull. Then they acquired Joseph Yeo and Dylan Ababou at season's end and really made a run. Only for those guys to somehow lose minutes, ride the bench and be traded pre- this season.

They say that the players didn't mind being dealt here and there or wearing that shameful red, yellow and black. As long as they were being paid on time for services rendered, it was all good.

But what about the younger players who want glory and fame? What about RR Garcia who deserves to be on a winning team given his stellar play and college resume? What about Mac Baracael? JC Intal?

These players deserve a shot at winning. Willie Wilson has worked so hard for so long, now putting up 20-20s, to be wasting his career away at some garbage team.

Let us not confuse Barako Bull with Red Bull. Sure, Mr. George Chua is present for both teams, but the morals, the winning mindset and pride of being a competitive PBA franchise-- those traits separate the two Chua ballclubs.

Goodbye Barako and good riddance.

Nothing to see here

Still waiting for Garcia's break out year
Because really, are there actual fans of the following teams and not just of the individual players who were "carried over" from their idol's former squad?

Barako Bull Energy Cola
If only this team weren't so blatant in being the league's premier farm team, we would actually vouch for this line-up. RR Garcia, JC Intal, Mac Baracael, Jervy Cruz and either the old Mick Pennisi (seriously, this guy should consider retiring soon) or Prince Caperal. Then there are guys like Chico Lanete, Josh Urbiztondo, James Forrester, Emman Monfort and Willy Wilson coming off the bench. Okay, maybe they have a surplus of point guards, but this should make for an exciting run-and-gun squad right?

Right.

Who pads his stats first? Last season, it was Denok Miranda who was able to stat-pad his way out of the Energy camp. Will it be Intal, who is coming off a solid Gilas 3 stint? Will it be Garcia, the former UAAP MVP, who we thought would break out last season after being freed from the burden of having to play with college buddy/ rival Terrence Romeo only to learn that hey, maybe Garcia's not THAT special after all? Or will it be Baracael, who will most likely go back to his stretch four roots and remind us of how special a player he looked back when he played for Gilas I?

Your guess is as good as ours. Coach Koy Banal will make this team compete, but at day's end when they start winning someone's bound to pull the plug. Remember Joseph Yeo last conference? When he started running his mouth about how "free" they were? Yeah, he got traded soon. But not before BB's winning streak fizzled out..

Trade reaction: Joe DeVance to Ginebra

JDV to Ginebra
This is the sad reality of the current state of Philippine basketball: there are the major players, the independents, and those who exist only to serve and appease the former.

Let us take a look at the most recent trades which involved the following teams: Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, STAR Hotshots, GlobalPort Batang Pier and Barako Bull Energy Cola. Two are sister teams, one has been a long time conduit while another seems to be well on its way as an insurance policy type of conduit. Needless to say, these four teams have always transacted with one another. They have never bothered to look elsewhere for trades most of the time. And as much as we would like to quit saying that yes, there are farm teams in the PBA, well, there are farm teams in the PBA.

If you would like to disagree, let us break down the trades then shall we?

Tim Cone to Ginebra

Sorry Johnny, Coach Tim and RdR
will be taking their talents to Ginebra
When we were first indoctrinated into the world of the Philippine Basketball Association in 1996, it was during the PBA Governor's Cup Finals-- a best-of-seven affair between the grandslam seeking Alaska Milkmen and the crowd darlings, Barangay Ginebra San Miguel.

On one side was the most charismatic head coach/ player in the history of the game, Robert Jaworski, Sr., commanding the likes of Noli Locsin, Bal David, Marlou Aquino and Vince Hizon. Now while we weren't familiar with the PBA brand of play, we already had a working idea of how basketball players should look and talk like thanks to the NBA. Let's just say that based on body fat percentage and muscle tone alone, none of the Ginebra players fit the mold save for maybe Vince Hizon. Yet they were the crowd darlings, they were fighting tooth and nail with a team that looked so fluid, so sexy, that it was hard NOT to root for the obvious underdogs.

Who exposed us to this title bout? Our mom. Who was an Alaska fan at the time, thanks to Jojo Lastimosa's looks and game. She was probably trying to turn us into Alaska fans too, but we ended up liking the other team. Anyway, Alaska was being coached by a dirty blonde who almost always finished every play drawn in the huddle with an "aight" or "all right?"

His name is Tim Cone.

Trade Rumors

Nice Photoshop skills. But trade still in limbo
While we await the final decision/ approval of the PBA Commissioner's Office, let's take a seat and digest the possible transactions that have already seen the light of Internet day (which, in reality, sounds more like gossip than news but hey, whatever sells right?).

First up is the blockbuster deal that would involve sister teams Barangay Ginebra San Miguel and San Miguel, and conduit Barako Bull Energy Cola. In this trade, Ginebra will get the services of Marcio Lassiter, San Miguel gets JC Intal and Barako lands Mac Baracael.

Sure, it involves sister and farm teams but when was the last time we had a trade of almost equal value in the PBA?

Lassiter to Ginebra?

Super Marcio
In this report by Snow Badua as seen on Spin.ph, Barangay Ginebra San Miguel's newly installed head coach Frankie Lim is exploring the possibility of adding sister team San Miguel Beer's Marcio Lassiter into the roster.

And you know what? It would make perfect sense.

Lassiter has been very inconsistent over at SMB, in a loaded wing rotation that features Chris Lutz, Ronald Tubid, Arwind Santos and even rookie Ronald Pascual. Most of the time he's on the bench nursing an injury, and when he is indeed healthy, he often finds himself getting in and out of rhythm simply because SMB head coach Leo Austria needs to spread the minutes for all the above-mentioned wing guys (so that he doesn't hurt any one's feelings).

Over at Ginebra though?

The kids are all right

You either die a hero,
or live long enough to be the villain
Last night the PBA Commissioner's Cup 8th seed Barangay Ginebra San Miguel was dealt yet another crushing quarterfinals loss, this time by their new-found box office adversaries, Rain or Shine Elastopainters.

We are going to leave the uncertainty of how the endgame played out to the experts (Mike Dunnigan didn't have possession, Jeffrei Chan poked the ball at maybe a millisecond before the shotclock buzzed, was out of bounds, went in to chase after it while every one else was waiting for a whistle that never came, took a step into the court from outside, took another step, retrieved it and went for the easy lay-up), what we'd like to discuss is every thing else that was wrong for Ginebra moving forward.

Like Mark Caguioa and Jayjay Helterbrand, two former PBA MVPs, playing heavy minutes despite their mileage (Caguioa is 35, Helterbrand 38). You say that they were making baskets out there for the team, sure, but so would a Joseph Yeo and L.A. Tenorio had they been given the minutes and touches.

PBA Commish Cup Finals: Alaska vs Ginebra

Author's note: Before we get to the PBA Finals preview, let's just make one thing clear: we are bloggers. We aren't paid to do this, so it doesn't matter if we end up being wrong with our "Fearless Forecasts." We're basing our predictions on who we feel and think will win based on what we've seen during games. You can call out all the sports commentators that you idolise, and they'll hand you a politically correct "50-50." This blog is all for fun, we'd love to hear from you so share away. We don't mind you calling us "haters" or what not, as long as it's all in good, Pinoy basketball fun. Okay?

Kung ayaw niyo talaga, e di gumawa kayo ng blog.

PG JVee Casio/RJ Jazul vs LA Tenorio
Thoss vs Tenorio
The two guys who were indirectly traded for one another will finally get to square off on the biggest stage of them all. On one hand you have the heir apparent to the PBA point guard throne, the other you have a guy who jumped from being one of the elite scorers in the amateurs to crashing the party of the would be "next in line" floor generals. If Casio approaches this series with his guns holstered, it's going to get ugly fast. Tenorio is the better defender and craftier scorer who will get the calls. If Casio isn't on the floor for the Aces, they'll have a lot of trouble getting into their sets (a.k.a. Calvin Abueva will run amock which could either be good or bad). Our advice to Jazul? Keep shooting and keep Tenorio on his toes. Tire the sumb*tch out.

PBA Commish Cup Semis: Never Say Die

The 6th Man cometh
Barangay Gineba San Miguel, after a slow start and 7th seed finish at the end of the PBA Commissioner's Cup Eliminations, are back in the PBA Finals after dismantling the mighty Talk 'n' Text Tropang Texters.

Say what you will about Ginebra, but they won the series and bonded together over the course of the conference. From a team that appeared to have absolutely no identity and chemistry, they've once again become a league powerhouse thanks to the great efforts of head coach Alfrancis Chua.

Before we proceed, our hats off to the Texters for putting up a heroic effort and going toe-to-toe with Ginebra until tonight's epic Game 5. Just imagine that the guys who are leading this team have been pulling "double duties"for so long, burning themselves out with their mother team and then also suiting up for Gilas Pilipinas. Fatigue and injuries spelled the Texters doom yet again-- Kelly Williams, Jared Dillinger, Jimmy Alapag (who suited up and played because that's just how the Mighty Mouse rolls) and then tonight, Ranidel de Ocampo.

PBA Commish Cup semis: Ginebra makes a statement

"WTF Jerome? I had centers
in college that play D better than you."
What in the blue mfkng hell was that?

The favored Talk 'n' Text Tropang Texters suffered a humiliating and near-devastating 81-104 blowout at the hands of Barangay Ginebra San Miguel to kickstart their PBA Commisioner's Cup semifinals showdown. This, after appearing to have recovered mid-conference and looking as poised as ever to march on to their nth PBA Finals

Well, don't tell Ginebra that.

PBA Commish Cup semis: Talk 'n' Text vs Ginebra

Best PG in the PBA
might be decided in this series
What a funny coincidence, having two low-seeded teams going at it for the right to advance to the 2013 PBA Commissioner's Cup Finals. On one side you have the 6th seeded Talk 'n' Text Tropang Texters which thoroughly man-handled the (reeling) 3rd seeded Petron Blaze Boosters. On the other, you have the 7th seeded Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, arguably playing their best basketball under Coach Alfrancis Chua, overcoming the odds and winning over 2nd seeded Rain or Shine Elastopainters.

And though we love and appreciate Ginebra's mighty run, there's no denying that from the looks of things, they are about to hit a brick wall which will effectively end their heroic and magical run.

See, the Elastopainters were supposed to win. They were complete, they were healthy and they have bigs in just about every position. Unfortunately, they took Ginebra lightly and didn't seem to have the right mentality going into the Playoffs and that's what cost them the series (with the defiant Ginebra veterans taking full advantage).

Ginebra: Started from the bottom, now they're here

Urbiztondo gets a ride to the semis;
thanks BaRajko
What a series!

Forget about the rankings for a minute (because the great sports writers of this generation would undoubtedly, unabashedly and shamefully milk the whole "7th seed upsetting a 2nd seed dry" anyway), this PBA Commissioner's Cup Playoffs between the Rain or Shine Elastopainters and the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel should go down as a classic.

Anytime Ginebra goes up against a Yeng Guiao-coached team, we find ourselves rather torn. We're loyal to old school basketball, which what the name "Ginebra" is all about, we love Mark Caguioa and think that he is the best Filipino basketball player ever second only to the great 4x PBA MVP Ramon Fernandez (with another 4x PBA MVP Alvin Patrimonio as 3rd best) but we just love the gritty stand that Guiao teams always play with.

Ginebra wins minus MVP

Tenorio's takeover
Despite not having reigning PBA Most Valuable Player Mark Caguioa in the fold the last couple of games, the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel have stormed into 4th place of the ongoing Commissioner's Cup thanks to a fiery six-game winning streak.

The victories, all via an average lead of about "only" 5.3 points, have been brought about by the obvious chemistry between prized acquisition L.A. Tenorio and replacement import Vernon Macklin (who took over for the ineffective Herbert Hill). From lobs to gimmes, the two have been a joy to watch with Tenorio enjoying his best string of games so far wearing Ginebra's red, white and black colors (averaging around 13 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists a game).

Also coming to Tenorio's aide are Kerby Raymundo (6 points, 4 rebounds in only 13 minutes), Mac Baracael and Rob Labagala.

Ginebra on fire

Slowly but surely, Kerby's back!
Winners of three straight, including last night's 84-81 yawn-fest versus the Meralco Bolts, the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel finds itself back in contention and finally playing with on-court chemistry and harmony. Though they are currently facing an injury scare with ace Mark Caguioa hurting his knee yesterday, you can't sleep on this team the way they're playing at the moment.

Gone is L.A. Tenorio's (11 ppg, 4 rpg, 6 apg) hesitance of taking control of the team and simply waiting for Caguioa (22 ppg 4 rpg 3 apg) to create scoring opportunities. In the last three wins, we've seen a more aggressive, back-to-normal Tenorio who fearlessly calls his own number, holds on to the basketball a bit longer rather than simply going to Caguioa and moving out of the way and just orchestrating like the floor general we know he is.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

Hay salamat Panginoon at natupad
ang dasal ko na mabalik sa contender
What a day it has been for local professional basketball-- while it may not look like much, anytime you can get five teams to agree on a deal that would have ten guys changing uniforms no matter their status in the league, this "mega deal" could prove to help balance a top heavy PBA come next conference.

To summarize, here are the guys who were part of the trade and where they have landed:

Ronald Tubid: Petron Blaze Boosters
Mac Baracael: Barangay Ginebra San Miguel
Aldrech Ramos: Alaska Aces
Alex Mallari, Leo Najorda and Lester Alvarez: San Mig Coffee
JC Intal, Jonas Villanueva, Allein Maliksi and Jojo Duncil: Barako Bull Energy

Now to help keep things interesting (and give us entries to have fun with while waiting for the Commissioner's Cup to start), we will split the entries into three parts. Since San Mig Coffee and Barako Bull got the most players out of the deal, it is only just that we give those teams separate entries all to themselves.

Calvin Abueva's beastly debut

Masaya kung akilala da ka
Dondon Hontiveros had one of those vintage MBA Cebu Gems performances in the 4th quarter. Cyrus Baguio had the most efficient game we've seen of him EVER. JVee Casio was being his usual, steady self at PG-- not making great reads or finds, but not turning the ball either.

But make no mistake, it was one debuting Calvin "The Beast" Abueva who stole the show and brought the Alaska Aces back with his hustle and energy to salvage an 88-86 win over the confused Petron Blaze Boosters.

12 points on 5/17 shooting, 16 rebounds (10 defensive/ 6 offensive), 1 block, 1 assist, 4 fouls and 2 turnovers in 27 minutes.

Aces start the year awful

Alaska's franchis player
is a glorified role player at best
While the future still looks bright (any or all arguments against the Aces' should be put on hold until their number 2 overall pick, the San Sebastian Stags' Calvin Abueva, suits up), the Alaska Aces opened their Philippine Cup campaign being blown out by the San Mig Coffee Mixers, 103-83.

The team trailed from the start, failing to execute their sets and looking worse than Air21 did the whole last season. That's just how awful they appeared to be against a Mixers' team that features a hall of fame coach in Tim Cone and a crew of established and still in their prime veterans led by James Yap, PJ Simon and a vintage all-around performance by Yancy de Ocampo. Sophomore Mark Barroca was also huge in this one, running circles over SMART Gilas buddy and now Aces' "PG of the future" JVee Casio.

Pilipinas sends Jones Cup core to FIBA Asia

Marked men: Norwood and Chan
(and Tenorio)
After all the drama following the highly successful 34th William Jones Cup campaign where Pilipinas finished with the gold medal, we will be sending the same group of players to the FIBA Asia Cup this September 14 in hopes of better preparing ourselves for the FIBA Asia Championship next year.

The road won't be any easier from here on out, with Pilipinas being put in the same group as China (though they're "only" sending their B team), Lebanon, Macau and Uzbekistan while the other group features Chinese-Taipei, Iran, Japan, Qatar and India FI. Okay, only Lebanon poses a real threat it seems in our group since Macau and Uzbekistan's basketball programs are still developing.
