Trade RXN: Jazul for Enciso

Well that's one way to keep yourself busy in between conferences.

After sending big man Prince Caperal to the Mahindra Floodbusters for rookie Joseph Eriobu, the Phoenix Fuel Masters have also decided to ship Simon Enciso to the Alaska Aces for veteran gunner RJ Jazul.

On the surface, it sounds a bit like the Aces won the trade since Enciso is coming off a great start to the season with averages of 34mpg 13ppg 3rpg 4apg while Jazul has mostly been the designated shooter off the bench. However, a closer look would show that Jazul isn't that far behind with his 24/ 10/ 3/ 3 statline.

So why make the trade?

Yes, we just used that sappy line from a wonderful local ditty as our title and we feel no remorse or shame.

Why would we, when Gilas rookie and Phoenix Petroleum Fuel Masters' small forward Matthew Wright is making believers out of just about anyone who has seen him play in the ongoing PBA Philippine Cup? Wright has impressed so far, with a high usage rate of 34 mpg and averages of 19 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists.

Obviously, his familiarity with  head coach Ariel Vanguardia has played in the amount of minutes  that he is currently enjoying. He could be playing behind veteran teammate JC Intal, who is also having quite the conference, but Coach Ariel has often shifted the Fil-Canadian to either SG or SF, depending on the situation and match-ups.

The new PBA season is upon us!

Here are a few game notes from two days' worth of games, missed out on today's 2nd game: the Rain or Shine-TNT match, so you'll have to make do with the Blackwater vs Phoenix one for now. Will catch the game later on replay (thanks OSN and Aksyon International)!

Also, if you've been paying attention, it seems like they found a strong digital marketing arm to help keep in step with the times which is a good thing (someone send us free tickets or something! Lol)

PBA GC QF 1 TNT vs 8 Phoenix

Can the Phoenix Petroleum Fuel Masters stop the TNT Katropa juggernaut? Can Eugene “El Destructor” Phelps muscle his way against TNT’s formidable frontline? Can Simon Enciso hold his own against the supernatural Jayson Castro?

It is definitely going to be an uphill climb for the Fuel Masters, with TNT in a groove that has helped them land 1st place in the elimination round after winning 10 games versus 1 loss. Whatever buttons Coach Jong Uichico has pushed, it appears to have definitely worked in his favor after TNT's woeful exit last conference.

Remember when we used to laud Marnel "Mac" Baracael as possibly the best two-way and PBA-ready player of the SMART Gilas I lot? A roster that boasts of Chris Tiu, JVee Casio, Mark Barroca and even the then unproven Fil-Am pair of Marcio Lassiter and Chris Lutz? We were that high on him, because he was that good a player.

Until he got drafted into the PBA.

For whatever reason, Baracael lost his way from being a legit "3 and D" guy who could cover spots 1 to 4 and somehow transformed into a mindless jackass, err, jacker. Defense? What defense?

This is why Emman Monfort's name is on this entry's title and not Baracael's. Because the 5"6 point guard who came out of the Ateneo basketball program has managed to make a name for himself in the pros, even when most had him pencilled as a future non-rotation player a.k.a. ABL/ D-League/ PCBL starter (this writer included).

On to the grades then.

PBAPC16 QF: 6 Talk n Text vs 7 NLEX

You know how it goes in the family when you are the youngest: if you want respect, you will have to earn it the hard way no matter how spoiled you appear to be. And the fastest way into obtaining that respect, is to somehow best your gifted older sibling who either comes home with a technicolor stamped arm for all the Stars and what not or trophies. Lots and lots of sports-related trophies.

This is where Coach Boyet Fernandez and his NLEX stands at the moment, finding themselves with a twice-to-beat disadvantage versus big brother Talk'n'Text. They have achieved little in the PBA so far and just when they were about to make a push for a deep playoff run, they are stuck having to duke it out early with the "family favorite."

Defiantly leading the charge for NLEX are Asi Taulava (33mpg 20ppg 12rpg) and Sean Anthony (35mpg 20ppg 12rpg 4apg), followed by the revived play of a healthy Jonas Villanueva (32mpg 11ppg 4rpg 4apg) and rookies Simon Enciso (26mpg 8ppg) and Kevin Alas (25mpg 8ppg 3rpg 2apg). There are games wherein Taulava and Anthony appear to be the only ones competing, but lately every one's been in a steady groove-- MacMac Cardona included.

It is never easy being the youngest in the family: sure, you get spoiled from time to time being, literally, the "new kid in town" but it also means that you are probably getting a lot of hand-me-downs from your older brother/s or sister/s. We cannot speak for the affluent, but for us middle to low class citizens, that means having to deal with wearing your big brother's signature basketball shoes for the majority of your basketball-formation age.

Until of course you actually can ball OR is old enough to really throw a huge selfish fit that your parents have no choice but to buy you your own kicks.

Well, that is what Coach Boyet Fernandez and his NLEX Road Warriors had to deal with their first time out in the PBA. They were given a broken down team, with spare parts coming by way of sister teams Talk'n'Text and Meralco, and really did not stand a modicum of a chance at competing fairly against the powerhouse teams.

This season however, Coach Boyet is making it work (currently with a 4 wins and 5 losses card) thanks to Sean Anthony (35mpg 19ppg 13rpg 4apg) and the ageless Asi Taulava (33mpg 20ppg 13rpg 2apg) leading the way. Both of whom could be called as "hand-me-downs" if you will, but don't tell them that. Hell, you could even say that their old teams would probably want them back in the fold in some manner (both TNT and Meralco could use a lot of Taulava, even Anthony)
