KKS reaction: Gary David, UFA

After choosing to sit out the 2nd half of an elimination match between his Meralco Bolts and sister team NLEX Road Warriors, Gary David finds himself in an even deeper hole than anyone ever expected.

We all thought that the story was over, since the Bolts’ management were said to have been “ok” with the idea of suspending and fining David for his insubordination, but now we are receiving reports that the former Gilas stalwart has been demoted to the unrestricted free agency list.


If a PBA team were to put a player on the UFA, that’s basically it for him. They don’t want him, they don’t even want to go through the nuances of dangling him for trade offers. Nah, they’ll just leave him out there for whoever wants his services (and all the baggage that comes with).

To David’s defense, he said that he went against Coach Norman Black’s orders because he was nursing a painful foot/ ankle injury.

To the Bolts’ defense, their medical staff said that nothing was wrong with David and that he was fully-functional enough to play basketball.

For a team like the Bolts, this was probably done to show a stern message all across the locker room (considering all the young talent that they have, i.e. the once-dubbed "Mr. self-entitled" himself, Rabeh Al Hussaini). They expect more from a guy like David, who was part of the Gilas program and also, a respected veteran. Imagine the damage that this may cause should Al Hussaini wake up one day and tell Coach Black, in the middle of a heated game, that "nah coach, I'm good. Let someone else play."

Yep. Not a good sign.

We hope that David gets reinstated soon, since he can still shoot it. His defense has always been abysmal, so there is that. But in limited minutes, he should be okay and might even go on a hot streak here and there.

That being said, David might be better off somewhere else.

Alaska? They have a bunch of old shooting guards, why not add another one? TNT? They might have some room. NLEX? Ginebra? They need a shooter, right?
