2016 PBA GC QF: 2 San Miguel vs 7 NLEX

Is NLEX ready for the semis? Is Coach Boyet Fernandez going to be around for next season? Will he call another ill-opportune timeout and have his assistant Adonis Tierra save his ass through the media?

Or will San Miguel move one step closer to defend their remaining title from last season?

PG Alex Cabagnot/ Chris Ross vs Kevin Alas
Alas is our guy, straight out of Letran. But he will get schooled by Cabagnot, a vastly under-rated Top 3 PG in the PBA, and just chased and chastised around by Ross. It is not even going to be pretty. It is going to be murder. Even Brian Heruela could come in and use his size to give Alas fits.

SG Marcio Lassiter vs Garvo Lanete/ Jonas VillanuevaThe Master versus the Cadet specialist. Lanete has made waves as of late, but we are not so sure if he can stand toe-to-toe with Lassiter. Villanueva will try, but yeah. No. We are not even sure if that would be a wise idea to begin with, to try and engage Lassiter in a shootout. If Lassiter’s in a funk, Coach Leo Austria could always go with Ryan Arana or Ronald Tubid or…

SF Elijah Millsap vs Henry Walker As good and natural a scorer as Walker is, he is still running with an obvious limp to go with some extra weight while standing before him is a guy who is in (or has yet to hit) his prime in Millsap. It should be very entertaining, and if the Beermen take Walker as a patsy he could very well win the whole thing for NLEX and force a clincher.

PF Arwind Santos vs Enrico Villanueva/ Mac BaracaelThis would have been great had it been 2007. Unfortunately, Villanueva has been reduced to being a rotation player following a series of injuries while Santos has kept himself afloat, posting somewhere around 15 points and 8 rebounds throughout his career. If Villanueva can bully his way into the paint, he could help take the load off Taulava. But Santos has always been pretty sturdy defending the rim, more than he is when forced outside. Glenn Khobuntin and Mac Baracael should be nice cross-matches for Santos… up until SMB sends in Gabby Espinas.

C Junemar Fajardo vs Asi TaulavaIf this were last year, we would flat out call it a night and say Fajardo will obliterate Taulava with his footwork. This year? It’s funny how that “no armbar” rule has played out, since guys of Taulava’s heft can now simply back their defenders down inside with little to no resistance. That’s not to say that Taulava can move Fajardo easily, but size-wise, the Fil-Tonggan is still wider and maybe a bit stronger than the 2x PBA MVP.
