After being pushed to the backseat by former college and pro teammate Terrence Romeo, Garcia was finally able to show his old UAAP MVP form for Barako Bull this Philippine Cup. Unfotunately, he suffered a shoulder injury just a few weeks back which has kept him on the sidelines going into this Quarterfinals match-up with, hey, Romeo and his GlobalPort squad.
Had Garcia (29mpg 17ppg 3rpg 2apg) been healthy, he and Romeo (30mpg 23ppg 4rpg 3apg) would have been the clear focus of this battle of recognized SMC farm teams (from a fan boy's standpoint, it could have been our "what if" Jayjay Helterbrand vs Mark Caguioa dream scenario... guess we will have to wait a bit longer on this one).
That being said, this is a good sign for the rest of the players for both camps to strut their stuff. It is going to be the hard-working blue-collar pair of JC Intal (33mpg 13ppg 6rpg 2apg) and Willy Wilson (37mpg 18ppg 12rpg 3apg) with some Josh Urbiztondo (21mpg 12ppg 2rpg 2apg) going up against Romeo, his bossom buddy Stanley Pringle (38mpg 21ppg 8rpg 5apg), Doug Kramer (24mpg 10ppg 10rpg), Joseph Yeo (28mpg 10ppg 3rpg 2apg) and Jay Washington (27mpg 9ppg 8rpg 2apg).
Things do not look all too pretty for Barako, huh?
Count on Barako Coach Koy Banal to make some team defensive adjustments, if only to neutralize GlobalPort's obvious inside strength. His team is looking at Jensen, Washington and Kramer, backed up by the likes of Rico Maierhofer, Billy Mamaril and Dorian Pena. The best has has at the moment would be Mick Pennisi and Rodney Brondial and the largely inconsistent malcontent known as Mac Baracael.
Best bet is to have Pennisi space the floor with his over-rated three-ball, then again Coach Pido can just counter that by sending Washington over at the 4 and silence the aging Fil-Aussie.
Even if Barako chooses to run small ball with Eman Monfort in the mix, GlobalPort's Romeo, Yeo and Pringle have no qualms running the floor with Roi Sumang and Paolo Taha just frothing at the mouth waiting their turns.
It is going to get ugly, with GlobalPort's advantage in firepower and muscle in full display.
Prediction: GlobalPort to advance.
